ABOUT

About this spot

Sakitsu Village in the southern part of Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a valuable site that forms part of the World Cultural Heritage "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region." The village's symbol, Sakitsu Church, is a Gothic-style church standing on the shore of calm Yoko Bay, and is also called the "Cathedral on the Sea" for its beauty. The inside has a rare tatami-mat floor, creating a unique space blending Japanese and Western styles. The history of the people who maintained their faith for over 200 years under the ban remains strongly in the narrow alleys (toya) and daily scenery of the village. For a stroll in the area, we recommend visiting Sakitsu Shrine, which served as a spiritual support for the Christians, and Sakitsu Maruyama Park with its view of the whole village. This nostalgic place wrapped in quiet prayer is ideal for history lovers as well as adults on solo or girls' trips who want to forget the bustle of daily life and calm their minds. There are also restaurants nearby serving fresh Amakusa seafood, so be sure to enjoy the local flavors between your historical walks.
