ABOUT

About this spot

Daikanbo in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is the highest peak of the northern Aso outer rim, at 936 meters above sea level. The view from here is famous as the "Nehanzo" (reclining Buddha), in which the five peaks of Aso look like the sleeping figure of Buddha, and you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama. Walking along the trail through vast grassland, the view over the Aso caldera basin and the distant Kuju mountains has an overwhelming scale that makes you forget the bustle of daily life. On autumn early mornings in particular, if the weather conditions are right, you may encounter a mystical "sea of clouds," which is hugely popular with photography enthusiasts and tourists. On the grounds is a shop, "Daikanbo Chaya," where you can enjoy dishes made with Aso specialties and soft serve ice cream made with Jersey milk. It is also an ideal rest stop for drives and motorcycle touring. Whether with family, friends, or on a solo trip, it is a sightseeing spot we highly recommend to anyone who wants to feel Kumamoto's great nature directly.
