ABOUT

About this spot

Aso Shrine in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is the head shrine of about 500 Aso shrines nationwide and a leading power spot with over 2,000 years of history. It enshrines twelve deities, including Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, the pioneer of Aso, and has long been revered as a deity protecting the region. The top highlight is the massive "Romon" tower gate, counted as one of Japan's three great tower gates. Although it collapsed in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, reconstruction was completed at the end of 2023 and it has regained its majestic appearance. The grounds are dotted with soul-cleansing spots, such as the "Negake no Ishi" (wish stone), said to grant wishes, and the "Enmusubi no Matsu" (matchmaking pine), said to bring good relationships. After worshipping, we recommend strolling the "Mizuki Meguri no Michi" (Water Spring Walk) in the temple-gate town. Delicious spring water bubbles up at spots throughout, and you can also enjoy street food and shopping. It is a must-see in Aso sightseeing, ideal for history lovers, dates with someone special, and solo trips to refresh body and mind.
