ABOUT

About this spot

Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine in Takamori Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a power spot drawing attention these days, with mystical scenery that feels as if you have wandered into another world. As soon as you step in, nearly 100 moss-covered stone lanterns line the approach, and light filtering through the towering cedar grove creates a fantastical atmosphere. Because of this overwhelming atmosphere, it is said to have been the model for the setting of a popular manga and animated film, and many tourists from Japan and abroad have come to visit, mainly through social media. Do not miss the giant rock formation "Ugetoiwa," located further up the mountain beyond the main hall. This place, where a huge rock has a large hole through it, is said by legend to have been kicked through by Kihachi Hoshi, an attendant of the god of Mt. Aso, and is believed to bring blessings of "breaking through hardships" and "success in exams and victory." The approach has steep stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. On days after rain when the moss glows, or days when mist rolls in, you can enjoy an even more mystical beauty. It is the perfect place for anyone who wants to forget everyday life and refresh mind and body in the silence.
