ABOUT

About this spot

Located in central Kumamoto Prefecture, Mt. Aso is known as an active volcano with one of the world's largest calderas, and its overwhelming scale continues to captivate visitors. The top highlight is viewing the crater of Nakadake, which still sends up white smoke today. Around the crater you can feel the dynamic breath of the earth up close, a valuable experience of sensing the planet's energy firsthand (*restrictions apply depending on volcanic activity). Just near the crater, "Kusasenri-ga-hama" is a vast grassland about 1 km in diameter where grazing horses stroll leisurely, one of Aso's signature scenic spots. Besides walking, horseback riding is popular too, making it ideal for creating memories with friends or family. The panoramic view of the five peaks of Aso from Daikanbo is also truly spectacular. During times when a sea of clouds is likely to form, you may even encounter a magical landscape. Whether you want to face nature quietly on a solo trip or feel the fresh breeze on a drive, Aso, which changes its face with the seasons, is a special place where people of every generation can truly refresh.
