ABOUT
About this spot
Nabegataki in Oguni Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, is an "ura-mi no taki" (a waterfall you can view from behind), where you can enjoy a magical experience of gazing at the forest through a curtain of water. The terrain is said to have been formed by the great Aso eruption about 90,000 years ago, and long years of erosion created a wide open space behind the falls. The falls span about 20 meters, and the sight of light filtering through the trees, mingling with the spray and sparkling, is truly spectacular. The greenery is especially beautiful in the season of fresh leaves, making it ideal for refreshing yourself in a shower of negative ions. To ease congestion, a web ticket system is now in place, and tickets must be purchased through the official website (same-day purchase is also possible). It is worth a visit in many settings, whether a drive with family or friends or a solo refresh. Walking paths are well maintained, but some spots are slippery, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Come see with your own eyes this treasure of Oguni, which shows a different face in every season.
