Janjan Yokocho

A shopping street at the foot of "Tsutenkaku," the symbol of Osaka's Shinsekai, where a strong Showa retro atmosphere remains. A "gourmet battleground" lined with famous kushikatsu and dote-yaki shops.

ABOUT

About this spot

"Janjan Yokocho," representative of Osaka's Shinsekai area, is officially named "Nanyo-dori Shotengai." Its name is said to come from the shamisen that rang out "jan-jan" to attract customers after the war, and the narrow alley about 180 meters long condenses Osaka's "iki" (chic spirit). A must when you come here is "kushikatsu," the representative Osaka dish. With the heat of the counter, you can enjoy the crispy texture of freshly fried skewers. The "dote-yaki," slowly simmered in white miso, is also excellent. In addition, shogi and go clubs, now rare, line the street, and seeing people absorbed in their games is a sight unique to this alley. From daytime drinks while dropping in alone, to bar-hopping with close friends, to a retro sightseeing experience with family, it is a spot enjoyed by a wide range of generations. Combined with nearby Tsutenkaku and Tennoji Zoo, enjoy the deep side of Osaka.
