Tennoji Zoo

Osaka's representative urban zoo, with over 100 years of history. Its charm lies in 'ecological exhibits' that recreate animal habitats.

ABOUT

About this spot

Opened in 1915, Tennoji Zoo is a traditional zoo with the third-longest history in Japan. Though located in the heart of the city, about 1,000 animals of about 180 species live on its roughly 11-hectare grounds. The biggest highlight is the 'ecological exhibits,' which recreate animals' habitat environments as closely as possible. In the 'African Savanna Zone' in particular, the design makes lions, giraffes and zebras appear within the same scenery, letting you see them in vivid form. The rare bird, the kiwi, which can be seen nowhere else in Japan, is also a must-see. The zoo has advanced barrier-free facilities, so families and wheelchair users can enjoy it with peace of mind. Nearby are the Shinsekai area, famous for Tsutenkaku Tower, and 'Tenshiba,' where stylish cafes gather, making it a perfect stop during sightseeing or dates.
