ABOUT

About this spot

The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts stands in Tennoji Park in Tennoji Ward, Osaka. It opened on May 1, 1936, and is now run by the Osaka Museum Organization. Its collection centers on Japanese and Chinese art, and the museum also has the Tennoji Gallery and an art research institute. The site was once the main residence of the Sumitomo family, built in 1914. The family donated the land to the city together with the Japanese garden Keitakuen so that a museum could be built, and the building was designed by Ito Masafumi and Kaijo Seiichi. It is a steel-framed reinforced concrete building with one basement level and three floors, and it was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property in 2015. The collection of more than 8,000 works comes largely from donations, such as the Abe collection of Chinese paintings and calligraphy, the Yamaguchi collection of Chinese stone Buddhas, the Kazar collection and the Tama collection of Japanese art. It includes Important Cultural Properties. The museum closed in October 2022 for seismic reinforcement and reopened on March 1, 2025. Plan on one to two hours for the exhibitions. Tennoji Zoo, Janjan Yokocho and Tsutenkaku are all within about 500 m, so the museum combines well with a walk through the area. Check the official website for current exhibitions and opening days.
