ABOUT
About this spot
Katsuura Morning Market, a leading attraction of Katsuura in Chiba Prefecture, is counted among Japan's three great morning markets, alongside Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture and Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Its history is long: it has continued for more than 400 years since the 19th year of Tensho (1591) and has been cherished as Katsuura's "morning face." From around 6:30 in the morning, colorful parasols line the street, and the stalls fill with seasonal vegetables grown by local farmers, fresh seafood just landed at Katsuura Port, and homemade pickles and dried fish. The warm exchanges with the vendors, such as "This one's delicious!" and "I'll throw in a little extra," are another big part of the market's charm. In recent years, street food has expanded as well, including light bites inspired by Katsuura's signature Tantanmen, freshly brewed coffee, and warabi mochi, so the market suits families, groups of friends, and solo travelers alike. Wandering the alleys, which retain a retro Showa-era atmosphere, with a pleasant sea breeze is a blissful time. The venue changes depending on the date: Shimohoncho Street from the 1st to the 15th, and Nakahoncho Street from the 16th to the end of the month. Wake up a little early and experience Katsuura's bounty and lively culture firsthand.
