ABOUT
About this spot
Mt. Nokogiri (Nokogiriyama) is a 329 m scenic spot representative of Chiba Prefecture. It got its name because the rock face, carved by quarrying that has continued since the Edo period, looks like the teeth of a saw (nokogiri). The top highlight is "Jigoku Nozoki" (Peek into Hell), a rock ledge that juts out from a sheer vertical cliff. From the thrilling ledge, a stunning panorama unfolds, taking in the blue waters of Tokyo Bay, the Miura Peninsula, and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji. Nihon-ji Temple, with its vast grounds, is dotted with historic and powerful spots, including one of Japan's largest stone Great Buddhas carved out of the rock, the Hyakushaku Kannon carved into the cliff, and an area lined with 1,500 expressive stone Buddhas. You can easily reach the summit by ropeway, but hiking along the trails while feeling the rich nature is also recommended. It is a perfect spot for a short weekend trip to forget everyday life and refresh.
