ABOUT
About this spot
Nojimazaki Lighthouse stands at the tip of Cape Nojima, which juts into the Pacific at the southernmost end of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. First lit in 1869, it is one of Japan's oldest Western-style lighthouses and is a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property. Loved as a "white lighthouse" for its beautiful pure white appearance, its contrast with the blue sky and sea is worth seeing. A great charm of this lighthouse is that it is one of only 16 "climbable lighthouses" in Japan. The observation deck at the top of the spiral staircase offers an unobstructed 360-degree Pacific panorama. The horizon, seen in the sea breeze, lets you feel the roundness of the Earth. The surrounding area is developed as Nojimazaki Park, full of photo spots such as the legendary Iwaya cave and a scenic bench called the Lovers' Bench. Dusk is especially beautiful, and the sun setting on the horizon creates a romantic moment. Whether for solo refreshment, a drive with friends, or a family stroll, it is a classic South Boso spot enjoyable in any situation.
