ABOUT

About this spot

Kumano Nachi Taisha, a sacred place representing Wakayama Prefecture, is a historic shrine forming one of the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano. From the grounds, reached after climbing 467 stone steps, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Nachi Falls, one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, together with the divine vermilion-lacquered halls. Long worshipped as a place where wishes come true, its chief deity, Kumano Fusumi no Okami, is beloved as a god of matchmaking and the fulfillment of wishes. The "Tainai-kuguri," passing through the trunk of the approximately 850-year-old great camphor tree in the grounds, is a popular experience among worshippers praying for good health. Its greatest appeal is that you can feel a serene atmosphere that conveys a long history together with the overwhelming energy of nature. It is ideal for a trip with friends, for quiet time alone with yourself, or for a weekend outing with family to experience Japanese culture. The view of the neighboring Seiganto-ji Temple's three-story pagoda overlapping with the falls is truly a highlight of sightseeing in Wakayama.
