ABOUT
About this spot
Nachi Falls, a representative scenic spot of Wakayama Prefecture, is a magnificent waterfall with a 133 m drop, the tallest of any single-drop waterfall in Japan. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" and has been revered since ancient times as the center of Kumano faith. The falls themselves are considered the object of worship of Hiryu Shrine, and the view through the torii gate is divine and exudes an overwhelming presence. From the "Otaki Haisho" (paid) viewing area, built close to the falls, you can feel the thundering sound of the water and the misty spray up close, an experience that purifies body and mind. The composition capturing the falls together with the three-story pagoda of the neighboring Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple is a scenic view symbolizing Japan and is also a very popular photo spot. Nearby is the Kumano Kodo's stone-paved "Daimon-zaka" slope, and a walk there letting you feel like a pilgrim of old is also recommended. Feeling the mysterious forest air and the energy of grand nature, this power spot is one we want visitors of all generations to experience as a special time away from everyday life.
