ABOUT

About this spot

Shionomisaki Lighthouse in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture, is a white lighthouse that has marked the southernmost tip of Honshu for more than 100 years. Among Japan's many lighthouses, it is known as a rare "climbable lighthouse" where you can actually walk up the interior stairs to the top. After climbing the narrow spiral staircase step by step, a grand panorama of the Pacific fills your view. The unobstructed horizon curving gently is a superb sight that lets you feel for yourself that the Earth is round. White waves crashing against the rugged cliffs below are also powerful, letting you experience nature's energy up close. Next to the lighthouse is an exhibition room where you can learn about how lighthouses work, their lenses, and their history. Nearby is the broad lawn of Boro no Shiba, perfect for strolls and picnics. Whether on a family drive, a trip with friends, or a quiet moment alone watching the sea, this is a spot where you can have a special time in any travel style. Why not refresh in the pleasant sea breeze at this special southernmost place?
