ABOUT

About this spot

Tomogashima, floating in the Kitan Strait, is the collective name for four islands: Jinoshima, Kamishima, Okinoshima and Torajima. On Okinoshima in particular, the main sightseeing island, gun battery ruins and ammunition depots built by the former Imperial Japanese Army in the Meiji period remain as they were, and their mystical atmosphere became a huge topic on social media as "strikingly similar to the world of Castle in the Sky." Walking past red-brick buildings quietly standing amid lush greenery and through cool tunnels, you will enjoy an adventurous feeling of having wandered into another world. Hiking trails are maintained on the island, and while visiting historic sites such as the Third Battery ruins, you can also enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea from the observation deck. With easy access, only 20 minutes by ferry from Wakayama City, it is ideal for solo travelers seeking the extraordinary, friends wanting photogenic shots, and families who enjoy a sense of exploration. Bringing a flashlight to explore the dark ammunition depots is the connoisseur's way to enjoy it. Put on comfortable walking shoes and head to this mystical island woven from history and nature!
