ABOUT

About this spot

If you are visiting Nanki-Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture, Senjojiki is a must-see. True to its name, which means "a thousand tatami mats," a vast expanse of rock shelf juts out toward the Pacific Ocean as if a thousand tatami mats had been laid side by side, and the overwhelming scale created by the forces of nature is breathtaking. This curious terrain was formed from sandstone worn away over many years by pounding waves. The distinctive rock surface, which feels slightly soft underfoot, is carved with beautiful striped patterns from wave erosion, truly a work of art drawn by the Earth itself. You are free to wander over the rock, so you can look for your own favorite photo spot and enjoy a refreshing time in the sea breeze. Sunset is especially recommended. The sky and sea turn golden, and the sight of the white rock shelf lit by the setting sun is breathtaking. It is perfect for a romantic date, a family photo against the vast scenery, or a solo refresh. Close to Sandanbeki and Shirarahama Beach, it is an essential stop on any itinerary that takes in the nature of Nanki-Shirahama.
