ABOUT
About this spot
Wakayama Castle, the symbol of Wakayama City, began in 1585 (Tensho 13) when Toyotomi Hideyoshi had his younger brother Hidenaga build it. Later, Tokugawa Ieyasu's tenth son, Yorinobu, took up residence there, and it became a key stronghold of the shogunate as the seat of the Kishu Tokugawa family, one of the three branches of the Tokugawa clan. The main highlight is the white-walled, linked-style main keep standing on the hilltop. Inside, weapons and old documents associated with the Tokugawa family are on display, and from the top floor you can enjoy a superb view over Wakayama City. Within the castle grounds, the Omote Bridge Corridor recreates the atmosphere of the Edo period, and you can enjoy the rare experience of actually walking across its wooden-floored corridor. The castle also has a zoo within its grounds, a rarity in Japan, making it perfect for family trips with children. Cherry blossoms bloom here in spring, and in autumn the castle is a popular foliage spot that draws many visitors. With history, nature, and leisure all in one place, it is a classic destination that people of all kinds, from solo travelers to groups, can enjoy all day.
