ABOUT

About this spot

Set at an elevation of about 800 meters in Wakayama Prefecture, Koyasan Kongobuji is a sacred center of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, founded by the great teacher Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Within its expansive grounds, stately buildings steeped in history draw visitors into a world of stillness and prayer. The highlight is Banryutei, one of Japan's largest rock gardens, which depicts a pair of dragons facing each other amid a sea of clouds. Its sheer scale and beauty make it ideal for a quiet moment of self-reflection on your own, or for sharing a peaceful time with a close friend. Don't miss the gorgeous sliding-door paintings that adorn the rooms of the main hall, created by artists including masters of the Kano school. The changing seasons add to the appeal, and in autumn the entire temple precinct blazes with color in a breathtaking spectacle. Programs such as sutra copying and Buddhist sermons are also on offer, letting you forget everyday life and refresh body and mind. Leave the bustle of the city behind and come feel the mysterious energy woven by history and nature.
