ABOUT

About this spot

Kumano Hongu Taisha, nestled in the deep mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, is one of Japan's foremost power spots and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the head shrine of the more than 3,000 Kumano shrines across the country, it has long been a "land of rebirth" where people of all social ranks have offered their prayers. As you climb the 158 stone steps leading to the shrine buildings one by one, the surroundings fall into a dignified silence and you can feel a sacred air that cleanses the heart. The classic hiwada-roofed (cypress bark) shrine buildings exude an overwhelming presence by their very appearance and convey the weight of history. In addition, at the former shrine site "Oyunohara," a few minutes' walk from the shrine, stands Japan's largest torii gate, an utterly spectacular sight. A short stroll along the nearby Kumano Kodo is also recommended. Whether you want to quietly face yourself or reflect on history with family and friends, it is a place that warmly embraces every visitor. Why not spend a time of refreshment, body and mind, at this sacred place woven from rich nature and timeless history?
