Engetsu-jima, the symbol of Shirahama. Its distinctive landscape with a round hole in the center is especially beautiful when the sunset aligns with the hole. It is a scenic spot selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Sunsets.

ABOUT

About this spot

Engetsu-jima, the emblematic scenic site of Nanki-Shirahama, is officially named Takashima. Its most notable feature is a round, moon-shaped hole opened in the center of the island by years of sea erosion, and its beauty is such that it was selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Sunsets. As one of Wakayama's signature photo spots, it continues to captivate many tourists and photographers. The highlight is the view at dusk. In spring and autumn, you may see the setting sun settle into the hole at the center of the island, a magical sight that could be called "Diamond Engetsu-jima." The beauty of that moment is breathtaking, making it perfect for a date with someone special or as the highlight of a soothing solo trip. The island itself cannot be visited on foot, but you can view it up close from the promenade along the coast. Its charm lies in its ever-changing expressions: the contrast with the clear blue sea in the daytime, and the silhouette tinged golden in the evening. With easy access from the ryokan of Shirahama Onsen, take an after-bath evening stroll and see this work of art created by nature with your own eyes.
