ABOUT
About this spot
Toretore Ichiba Nanki-Shirahama, a giant seafood market representing Nanki-Shirahama, Wakayama, is one of western Japan's largest commercial facilities, operated by the local Katada Fishermen's Cooperative. In its vast interior, not only fresh seafood caught in the waters off Wakayama but also seasonal delicacies from the sea gathered from all over the country are packed in, letting you enjoy the lively atmosphere of a market. The highlight is the "tuna-cutting show" held every day, where a giant tuna is cut up with a craftsman's skillful hands, a spectacular sight. Buying freshly cut meat on the spot, or feasting on seafood rice bowls and nigiri sushi proud of their fresh toppings in the food court, is part of the fun. In the outdoor "Toretore BBQ" corner, you can grill and eat ingredients you have just bought at the market, which is ideal for livening up a family or friends group. The souvenir corner is also very well stocked, with Wakayama specialties such as umeboshi (pickled plums), local sake, and famous sweets, making it very convenient for a stop at the end of your trip. With a spacious parking lot and indoor facilities that can be enjoyed even on rainy days, it is a spot where anyone, regardless of age, can enjoy the food charms of Wakayama with confidence.
