ABOUT
About this spot
Located close to central Sapporo, Maruyama Zoo is a historic zoo that opened in 1951. Set in lush surroundings next to the Maruyama Primeval Forest, it focuses on "habitat exhibits" that recreate the animals' natural environments. At the "Elephant House," one of the largest in Japan, you can see a herd of Asian elephants up close, and the "Polar Bear House," where you can watch polar bears swim from an underwater tunnel, is also hugely popular. In winter, you can enjoy a scene unique to Hokkaido: red pandas and snow leopards actively moving about in the snow. The zoo is increasingly barrier-free, with nursing rooms and indoor rest areas, so families with small children can feel at ease. Ideal for a weekend date or a solo refresh, it is a soothing spot where you can slowly learn about the fascinating lives of animals while feeling the changing seasons.
