ABOUT
About this spot
Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, is one of Japan's most popular tourist spots. It became known nationwide through its groundbreaking method of 'behavioral exhibits,' which bring out animals' natural abilities and behaviors. Highlights include immersive exhibits that make you feel you have wandered into the animals' world, such as the 'Seal House,' where you can see seals passing through a cylindrical glass tank, and the 'Penguin House,' where penguins swimming through an overhead tunnel look as if they are flying through the sky. In winter, the 'Penguin Walk,' held partly for exercise, lets you watch them walk adorably on the snow right before your eyes. The zoo has many slopes, but with rest areas, restaurants and a shop with a full range of original goods, families, couples and solo visitors can enjoy it all day. Please be healed by the lively sight of animals that change their look with the seasons.
