ABOUT
About this spot
A classic sightseeing spot you can't miss when visiting Sapporo is the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building. Built in 1888, this beautiful brick building in the American Neo-Baroque style is beloved by many under its nickname, the Red Brick Government Building. Reopened in July 2025, it also lets you view the exhibits inside. Even just strolling around the stately exterior and the spacious front garden gives a real sense of the history of Hokkaido's pioneering days. The scenery changes with the seasons: cherry blossoms and tulips in spring, water lilies in summer, blazing rows of ginkgo trees in autumn, and red brick set against pure white snow in winter. It is also illuminated at night, creating a magical, romantic atmosphere quite different from the daytime. Within walking distance of Sapporo Station, it is easy to reach and worth visiting in any situation, whether for a solo stroll, a date, or a commemorative family photo. It is an Important Cultural Property that Sapporo is proud of.
