ABOUT
About this spot
Matsumae Castle (official name: Fukuyama Castle) is the last Japanese-style castle built in Japan, completed in 1854 at the end of the Edo period. The site, which also served as a stage in the Boshin War, is now open to the public as a history museum where you can learn about the history of the Matsumae domain, its relations with the Ainu, and precious armor and documents. The greatest attraction is the cherry blossoms of Matsumae Park spreading across the grounds. More than 10,000 cherry trees of 250 varieties are planted, and a magnificent view unfolds from late April to mid-May. The blossoms blooming against the backdrop of the castle keep are a sure hit for photos. It is great for quietly soaking in history on a solo trip or strolling the spacious park with family. Besides the spring cherry blossom season, it shows different faces in the fresh greenery of summer and the autumn leaves of fall. It is a special place where you can spend relaxing time while feeling the weight of Hokkaido's history.
