ABOUT
About this spot
Quietly standing on the Nemuro Peninsula at the far eastern end of Hokkaido, the Nemuro Peninsula Chashi Sites are precious historic sites that convey the breath of Ainu culture to this day. "Chashi" means "fortress" or "palisaded enclosure" in the Ainu language and was once used as a base for rituals, lookouts and defense. In Nemuro City, 32 chashi sites have been confirmed, of which 24 are designated National Historic Sites. Particularly recommended are the "Notsukamafu Chashi Site" and the "Onnemoto Chashi Site." Semicircular moats skillfully utilizing steep coastal cliffs remain clear to this day, letting you reflect on the wisdom and lives of the people of the time. Before your eyes spreads the Sea of Okhotsk as far as you can see. Walking while feeling the rough sound of the waves and the sea breeze gives you a special sensation of traveling to the "end of the earth." Though popular for the "Japan's 100 Famous Castles" stamp rally, there are no stone walls or castle keeps like typical castles. It is a perfect place for an adult adventure, searching for the footprints of history carved into untouched nature. After enjoying Nemuro's specialty, escalope, be sure to make the trip out here.
