ABOUT

About this spot

Shiretoko takes its name from the Ainu word "Sir-etok," meaning "the end of the earth," and is one of the places in Japan closest to wild nature. In this World Natural Heritage Site, you can experience up close a rich ecosystem inhabited by brown bears, Ezo deer, and rare eagles. If it is your first visit, a walk around the Shiretoko Five Lakes, five lakes dotted through a quiet forest, is recommended. From the barrier-free elevated boardwalk, you can safely enjoy the contrast between the panorama of the Shiretoko mountains and the beautiful lakes. For more adventure, a cruise on a small boat is ideal. Viewing sheer cliffs unreachable from land and the Kamuiwakka Falls, which flow directly into the sea, from the water is a breathtaking experience. In winter, drift ice fills the sea, and there are activities you can find only here, such as the "Drift Ice Walk" across a pure white world. Whether you savor the silence on a solo trip or are moved by the overwhelming wilderness with family and friends, the harsh yet beautiful face of each season will leave an impression that stays with you for life.
