Cape Kamui Lighthouse

One of Hokkaido's finest scenic spots, with the crystal-clear blue sea known as Shakotan Blue and dramatic sheer cliffs. A black-and-white lighthouse first lit in 1888 stands at the tip of the cape, and the 300-degree horizon panorama is breathtaking.

ABOUT

About this spot

Jutting out from the Shakotan Peninsula into the Sea of Japan, Cape Kamui is a historic place once known as off-limits to women. A ridge-top walking path called the "Charenka Trail" leads from the parking lot to the lighthouse at the tip of the cape, offering a scenic hike of about 20 minutes one way. On either side of the path stretches the breathtakingly beautiful "Shakotan Blue" sea. On clear days, the transparent water sparkles like a jewel in the sunlight. The trail rises and falls along the way, but walking with the sea breeze on your face is a blissful time that makes you forget the bustle of everyday life. From around Kamui Misaki Lighthouse at the tip of the cape, you can take in a 300-degree view of the horizon. It is ideal for a drive with friends, a solo trip of self-reflection, or a date with someone special. After your walk, be sure to try the local specialty, "Shakotan Blue soft serve," at a nearby shop. Feel the power of nature with your whole body at this highlight of sightseeing in Hokkaido.
