ABOUT
About this spot
Takasaki Byakui Daikannon, the symbol of Takasaki City in Gunma Prefecture, is a magnificent 41.8-meter Kannon statue built in 1936. Standing with a compassionate expression as if watching over the city, it warmly welcomes visitors. The biggest attraction is the "inside-the-statue visit," where you can enter the body of the Kannon. The nine-story interior enshrines 20 statues of Buddhas and eminent monks, and you can enjoy a worship experience in a serene atmosphere as you climb the spiral staircase step by step. From the windows on the top floor, you can see not only the Takasaki cityscape but also Mt. Akagi, Mt. Haruna, and Mt. Myogi (the Joshu Sanzan), and even the distant Yatsugatake on a clear day. The surrounding area is developed as Kannonyama, and it is a leading cherry blossom viewing spot in the prefecture, with about 3,000 cherry trees blooming in spring. It is also known as a power spot for love, and around Valentine's Day a "red thread prayer" is held, making it popular with couples. It is a sightseeing spot full of history and healing, ideal for weekend family outings, drives with friends, or solo refreshment.
