ABOUT
About this spot
Fukiwari Falls in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, is called the "Niagara of the East" for its grand scale, 7 meters high and 30 meters wide. The spectacle of water violently plunging as if splitting the bedrock of the riverbed is awe-inspiring, and the falls are designated a National Natural Monument and Place of Scenic Beauty. A well-maintained promenade surrounds the falls and takes about an hour to walk around. Besides seeing the thundering falls up close, you can admire a huge strange rock called "Hannya-iwa" and the natural beauty of every season. In the autumn foliage season in particular, the contrast between vivid trees and white spray is beautiful, attracting many tourists and photographers. The area also has many souvenir shops selling local specialties and restaurants, and tasting the famous "juwari soba" (100% buckwheat noodles) and "okkirikomi" (flat noodle stew) is part of the fun. Soaking up plenty of negative ions, it is the perfect spot for a weekend day trip with family and friends to feel the energy of nature.
