ABOUT
About this spot
Minowa Castle in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, is a Sengoku-period castle ruin ranked among Japan's 100 Famous Castles. It is known as an "impregnable fortress" from which the renowned commander Nagano Narimasa repeatedly repelled the fierce assaults of Takeda Shingen, and it holds great appeal for history lovers. Across the vast grounds, dramatic dry moats and high earthen ramparts survive just as they were in their day, letting you feel the power unique to a medieval castle. In recent years, faithfully reconstructed features such as the wooden bridge and the Kuruma-umadashi Nishi Koguchi Gate (the western gate of the horse-yard enclosure) have been completed, making it easier to picture the castle's imposing appearance in its prime. The lush natural setting is another attraction, and a stroll enjoying the scenery of each season is a perfect way to refresh yourself. Thanks to the well-maintained paths, it is ideal both for quietly soaking up the history on your own and for a hiking-style outing with family or friends. From the open viewpoints you can take in the whole of Takasaki's cityscape, enjoying a moment of real openness. Why not spend a leisurely weekend touching the romance of history?
