ABOUT
About this spot
The Tomioka Silk Mill, in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, is Japan's first full-scale mechanized silk reeling mill, established in 1872 (Meiji 5) by the Meiji government to advance Japan's modernization. In 2014, in recognition of its historical value, it was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of "Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites." Within the vast grounds, the "Reeling Shed," which introduced the most advanced technology of its time, and the huge "East and West Cocoon Warehouses," where cocoons were stored, are preserved just as they were. The distinctive architectural style known as "timber-framed brick construction," which combines a wooden frame with brickwork, is especially impressive, and the beauty of the buildings is like art in itself. On site, guided tours by commentators (paid) and audio guides you can listen to on your smartphone are available, allowing you to learn in detail about the lives of the female workers of the time and how silk reeling worked. It is a perfect spot not only for history lovers, but also for those who want to take photos against a backdrop of beautiful architecture or feel the path Japan has taken in a calm atmosphere. Be sure to also enjoy snacking and strolling along the retro shopping streets nearby.
