Onioshidashi Park

Lava flows from the great 1783 eruption of Mt. Asama have hardened into a spread of strange rock formations, a scenic spot sometimes counted among the world's three great wonders.

ABOUT

About this spot

Formed by the great eruption of Mt. Asama in 1783, Onioshidashi Park is a one-of-a-kind scenic spot where you can feel the raw power and mystery of nature up close. The vast expanse of rugged black lava formations is so overwhelming in scale that you may feel as if you have landed on another planet. Several walking routes are available within the park, so you can explore comfortably at a pace that suits your stamina. At the center stands Asama Kannondo Hall, built to console the victims of the eruption and now also popular as a power spot for warding off misfortune. The park shows a different face in every season: delicate alpine plants in spring, the contrast of lava and autumn foliage in fall, and a quiet, snow-dusted landscape in winter. With easy access from central Tokyo, it is also ideal to combine with a visit to Karuizawa. Come experience the wonders of nature with family or friends, or enjoy a quiet solo stroll.
