ABOUT
About this spot
Nestled in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, Shima Onsen is a historic hot spring resort that, as its name suggests ("shima" can mean forty thousand), is said to heal forty thousand ailments. It is a perfect spot for those who want to escape the city bustle and spend quiet time. The biggest highlight is the highly transparent Lake Okushima and Shima River, known as "Shima Blue." Activities such as canoeing are also available. The hot spring town retains a strong Showa-era retro atmosphere, and places such as the main building of Sekizenkan, said to be Japan's oldest wooden ryokan, offer photogenic scenes that feel like stepping into a movie. The hot spring water can also be drunk and is said to be especially good for the stomach and intestines. Touring the foot baths and public baths scattered around town while munching on local specialty yaki-manju (grilled buns) is a pleasure unique to Shima Onsen. Whether for a girls' trip, a couple's date, or a holiday of solo relaxation, you will find heartwarming experiences in every kind of situation.
