ABOUT

About this spot

Mt. Akagi, a renowned peak of Gunma Prefecture, is a compound volcano whose main peak is Mt. Kurobi at 1,828 m, and has long been beloved as one of the Joshu Sanzan. Near the summit lies the vast caldera lake "Onuma," and on its shore stands "Akagi Shrine," whose vivid red-lacquered buildings contrast beautifully with the blue of the lake, and which is famous as a power spot for granting women's wishes. The changing seasons are very rich, with Renge-tsutsuji azaleas and alpine plants from spring to summer, autumn leaves dyeing the entire mountain in fall, and smelt fishing and snowshoeing on the frozen lake in winter, so there is always something new to discover. Because of its high elevation, it is also an ideal summer retreat, perfect for family drives and camping with friends. A variety of courses are available, from well-maintained hiking trails that even beginners can enjoy to routes for serious mountaineering, and it is also recommended for refreshing on a solo trip. With good access from downtown Maebashi, it is an appealing spot where nature and history meet, ideal for casual weekend leisure.
