ABOUT
About this spot
Kofu Castle (Maizuru Castle Park), in the center of Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is recommended not only for history fans but for anyone who enjoys a stroll. Built on the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi after the fall of the Takeda clan, this castle was once an important base for keeping Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Kanto region in check. Step into the park and the first thing that catches your eye is the splendid stone walls that retain much of their original appearance. The walls built with the "nozura-zumi" technique in particular radiate a rugged yet powerful beauty. At the restored Kurogane Gate and Inari Turret, you can get a close look at the architectural techniques of the era, and the exhibits inside are also worth seeing. The top highlight is the view from the keep platform, where the main keep once stood. On a clear day, you can take in a 360-degree panorama of majestic Mt. Fuji to the south, along with the surrounding Southern Alps and Yatsugatake. In spring, about 160 cherry trees bloom, making it a well-known hanami spot, ideal for families, couples on dates, or a solo refresh. Just a 5-minute walk from the station, it is easy to reach, so be sure to stop by when sightseeing in Kofu.
