ABOUT
About this spot
Located at the foot of Mount Fuji, Oshino Hakkai consists of eight mystical spring ponds. The former "Lake Oshino" dried up, and Mount Fuji's snowmelt was filtered for decades among underground lava and welled up again. It has been selected as a National Natural Monument and one of Japan's 100 Famous Waters, and is also registered as a component of the World Heritage site "Fujisan." The highlight is, above all, the water's clarity. Watching swaying water plants and swimming fish on the bottom of the deep cobalt-blue ponds, which seem to draw you in, is a healing moment that makes you forget daily life. Strolling around the ponds, each with its own legend, such as "Wakuike" and "Deguchi-ike," lets you feel both history and nature. The surrounding area is also well equipped with old thatched-roof houses and shops where you can enjoy tofu and soba made with the famous spring water. On clear days, you can see beautiful Mount Fuji beyond the ponds, which makes it a very popular photo spot. It is a famous spot that suits families, friends, or solo refreshment, with different faces in every season.
