ABOUT
About this spot
Museum Meiji-mura is one of Japan's largest open-air museums, relocating and preserving historic buildings of the Meiji era. On its vast grounds of about 1 million square meters stand more than 60 buildings, including nationally designated Important Cultural Properties such as the Imperial Hotel main entrance and St. John's Church, and stepping inside feels like time-traveling to the Meiji period. Besides viewing the exhibits, a great attraction is that one of Japan's oldest steam locomotives, a Kyoto city tram, and a village bus actually run, letting you tour the village aboard retro vehicles. Meiji-era food is also plentiful, including the "Shokudoraku Curry Bread" and gyunabe beef hot pot reproducing recipes of the time, so you can experience history with all five senses. The scenery of each season is also beautiful, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves especially stunning. It is also famous as a filming location for anime and dramas, with plenty of photo spots. It is ideal for strolls with friends or couples, educational trips with family, and quiet holidays spent alone immersed in history.
