ABOUT

About this spot

One of Nagoya's leading sights, Atsuta Jingu, affectionately known as "Atsuta-san," is an ancient shrine with a history of about 1,900 years. Famed for enshrining the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, one of the Three Sacred Treasures, it is revered as the most sacred shrine after Ise Jingu. Although it lies in the middle of the city, its grounds of about 60,000 tsubo are covered in lush greenery, and a solemn atmosphere fills the air as soon as you step inside, making it a true power spot. Highlights abound, such as Nobunaga-bei, the wall Oda Nobunaga donated in gratitude for a victory in battle, and the great camphor tree over 1,000 years old said to have been planted by Kobo Daishi. At the Kusanagi-kan Sword Treasury, many precious Japanese swords are on display, and even those who are not sword enthusiasts will be struck by their beauty. After paying your respects, we also recommend trying Nagoya cuisine at Miya Kishimen within the grounds. For a family stroll or a refreshing solo trip, it is a special place where people of all ages can find calm and feel Japanese culture.
