ABOUT

About this spot

The Oya History Museum in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a museum that tells the history of Oya stone quarrying, but its true appeal lies in the huge former quarry spreading underground. This giant underground space, about 20,000 square meters in area and 30 meters deep, creates a fantastical atmosphere like an ancient temple or a sci-fi movie set. The lit rock walls are beautiful, and because of this unique landscape, it has been used as a filming location for movies, dramas, and music videos, and even as a venue for concerts and weddings. The average annual temperature in the mine is very low at around 8 degrees, so in summer it works as a natural air conditioner for cooling off, while in winter it feels warmer than the outside air. Even in summer, we recommend bringing a thick jacket. Around the museum are stylish cafes and galleries that use Oya stone, which you can enjoy along with your stroll. It is a leading Tochigi sightseeing spot we hope you visit at least once if you want to experience an extraordinary space that makes you forget daily life.
