ABOUT

About this spot

Lake Chuzenji in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a nature-rich lake formed about 20,000 years ago by an eruption of Mt. Nantai. At 1,269 m above sea level, it is known as the highest natural lake in Japan (excluding man-made lakes), and from the Meiji era to the early Showa era, foreign embassies built their villas here, making it a bustling international summer retreat. Its greatest appeal is its rich expression through the four seasons: fresh greens in early summer, fiery autumn leaves in autumn, and snow scenery wrapped in winter silence, so you can find moving views whenever you visit. The foliage season from mid to late October is especially stunning, with maples and rowans around the lake vividly colored in contrast with the clear blue lake surface. A panoramic cruise on a sightseeing boat to view the majestic form of Mt. Nantai from the lake is an activity you should not miss. Nearby, sightseeing spots such as "Kegon Falls," one of Japan's Three Famous Waterfalls, and the prestigious "Futarasan Shrine Chugushi" are within walking distance. A weekend walking along the lakeside paths, breathing the fresh air and feeling nature's energy, is ideal for travelling with friends or family, or for refreshing on your own.
