ABOUT
About this spot
Senjogahara in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is one of Japan's leading highland marshes and a representative of Nikko National Park. It got its name from a legend that mountain gods once fought over Lake Chuzenji here. Within the vast area of about 400 hectares, flat and easy-to-walk wooden boardwalks are provided, so even beginners and families can enjoy a comfortable hike of about two hours. In the marsh, more than 350 kinds of plants, such as cotton grass and Japanese meadowsweet, bloom from spring to summer, and in autumn the entire marsh turns golden in a spectacular "kusamomiji" (grass autumn colors). It is also known as a treasure trove of wild birds, and birdwatchers visit constantly. Because of the high elevation and lack of surrounding obstructions, it is also a famous stargazing spot where a sky full of stars spreads out at night. It is a spot we highly recommend for solo travelers who want to leave the bustle of the city and refresh while feeling the dynamic breath of nature, and for those who want to capture the landscapes of each season on camera.
