ABOUT
About this spot
Banna-ji Temple in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a prestigious temple known as the family temple of the Minamoto-lineage Ashikaga clan. Because it was originally the Ashikaga clan's residence (a samurai mansion), it is notably surrounded by a moat and earthen ramparts. Although a temple, it has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles, and is a delight for history lovers. The main hall in the center of the grounds is designated a National Treasure as a valuable relic conveying the architectural style of the Kamakura period. Its solid presence speaks of the strength of the samurai of the time. You can also enjoy seasonal nature: in autumn the giant ginkgo tree, about 650 years old, turns vivid colors, and in spring beautiful cherry blossoms adorn the grounds. Nearby is the Ashikaga School, Japan's oldest school, and strolling the charming stone-paved streets is also recommended. This is a famous spot for anyone wanting a peaceful time, whether on a weekend family trip, a solo journey through history, or taking photos with friends.
