ABOUT
About this spot
Kinugawa Onsen in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a historic hot spring area discovered in the Edo period, once a prestigious place used only by priests and feudal lords on Nikko pilgrimages. Today it is affectionately known as "Tokyo's back parlor," forming a lively hot spring town with many inns and large hotels along the magnificent gorge of the Kinu River. Its greatest appeal is the gorge scenery that changes with the seasons. In the autumn foliage season in particular, fiery trees and the emerald green river create a beautiful contrast, and the view from the open-air baths is exceptional. The water is an alkaline simple spring that is colorless, transparent, tasteless, and odorless. It is gentle on the skin and well known as a "beauty bath" that anyone from children to seniors can enjoy safely. There are also plenty of activities beyond the hot spring, with theme parks such as the thrilling "Kinugawa Line Kudari" boat ride, "Tobu World Square" recreating structures from around the world, and "Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura," where you can enjoy an Edo-period townscape, all nearby. A free footbath in front of the station is also perfect for a rest during a stroll. Whether you relax on a solo trip or have a lively time with friends and family, it is a versatile sightseeing spot.
