ABOUT

About this spot

Kegon Falls in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is counted among Japan's Three Famous Waterfalls, and you can enjoy the grand sight of water from Lake Chuzenji plunging all at once down a 97-meter cliff. The highlight is the observation platform reached by a dedicated elevator. Looking up at the falls from up close, you can feel on your skin the overwhelming power of the roaring water and rising spray. The falls show different faces through the seasons: fresh greens in spring and early summer, and especially the autumn foliage season, when surrounding trees are vividly colored and contrast beautifully with the falls. In winter, you may also see the mystical phenomenon called "blue ice," in which small waterfalls freeze. The area has plenty of souvenir shops and restaurants serving local specialties such as "suiton" and "gyoza croquettes." Whether you are making memories with family, driving with friends, or traveling quietly alone to enjoy nature, it is a Nikko sightseeing staple that satisfies any purpose.
