Ryuzu Falls

One of the signature waterfalls of Oku-Nikko. A large rock splits the flow near the plunge pool, resembling a dragon's head, which gave it its name. The autumn foliage is especially spectacular.

ABOUT

About this spot

Ryuzu Falls in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a scenic spot counted among the Three Great Waterfalls of Oku-Nikko, along with Kegon Falls and Yudaki Falls. Located at an elevation of 1,350 meters, the Yukawa River flowing from Lake Yunoko tumbles powerfully for 210 meters down a steep rock face just before it empties into Lake Chuzenji. Near the plunge pool, a large rock divides the flow in two, and its shape resembling a dragon's head is said to be the origin of the name. This is famous as a place where autumn colors begin earliest in the Nikko area, and the scenery of maples and azaleas vividly colored from late September to early October is spectacular. From the falls viewing deck at the teahouse in front of the falls, you can sit and enjoy the full powerful view of the waterfall while savoring the specialty "Semui Dango," for a luxurious moment. A stepped walking path alongside the falls lets you feel the flow up close from the side. A scenic spot that shows natural beauty in every season, it is ideal for family trips, dates, or solo refreshing trips.
