ABOUT
About this spot
Mikimoto Pearl Island in Toba City, Mie Prefecture, is the commemorative island where Kokichi Mikimoto became the first in the world to succeed in culturing pearls, in 1893. Today the entire island is a sightseeing facility, loved as a place where you can experience everything about pearls. At the "Pearl Museum" on the island, you can learn in detail about how pearls form and the history of pearl culture, and the many antique jewelry pieces and gorgeous works of art are breathtakingly beautiful. The "diving demonstration" by ama divers in traditional work clothes, who once supported pearl culturing, is a valuable performance you can see nowhere else in Japan. Between strolls, you can have a meal at a restaurant overlooking Toba Bay or shop at the pearl shop stocked with high-quality pearl products for a luxurious time. With many indoor exhibits, you can enjoy it all day regardless of the weather. Why not make special memories on this island where history and beauty resonate?
