ABOUT

About this spot

Toba Aquarium is a leading Mie Prefecture attraction that boasts Japan's largest number of species kept, about 1,200. The building is divided into 12 zones, and its giant scale, about 240 m in length with about 1.5 km of total walkways, is a draw. It is also known as the 'aquarium with no set route,' where you can tour in any order you like and enjoy the areas that interest you at your own pace. The biggest highlight is the dugong, which can be seen only here in Japan. Its graceful form, said to be the model for mermaid legends, is a must-see. There are endless other attractions too, such as the adorable sea otters whose feeding time is hugely popular, the African manatee that is rare in Japan, a powerful sea lion show, and walrus meet-and-greet time where you can observe them right before your eyes. Because it is entirely indoors, you can spend a whole day with peace of mind even on rainy days. Close to Ise Jingu, it is a must-see in Ise-Shima sightseeing where you can have a moving experience in any situation, whether a family trip, date or solo trip.
