ABOUT

About this spot

The Akame Taki Aquarium is a very rare aquarium specializing in Japanese giant salamanders, located at the entrance to the Akame 48 Falls, a scenic area in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture. It was renamed from the "Japan Salamander Center" in April 2024 and renewed with a more refined exhibition space. Inside, you can observe up close the Japanese giant salamander, a national Special Natural Monument also called a "living fossil." Focusing on individuals living in the local Akame Gorge, you can learn about their humorous appearance and ecology, with content enjoyable from adults to children. The tank exhibits recreating the gorge's natural environment will further heighten your anticipation for the waterfall tour that is about to begin. After seeing the aquarium, you can head straight onto the hiking course lined with beautiful waterfalls, which is another attraction. Away from the bustle of daily life, it is a perfect spot to spend a luxurious holiday, healed by the murmur of clear streams and rare creatures. We strongly recommend it for weekend family trips and for solo travelers who want to enjoy nature quietly.
